Background infomation

The Eswatini National Museum is a section in the Department of Cultural Heritage, regulated and managed by the Eswatini National Trust Commission. The main objective of the National Museum is to collect, preserve, conserve and store tangible and intangible cultural heritage for posterity. The materials collected are exhibited in halls and our trained educators interpret the displays to the public.

The exhibitions show history of EmaSwati from Stone Age, colonialism up to independence. The temporary exhibition hall presents thematic displays according to annual themes shared by the International Council of Museums. There is a natural history wing which showcases the relationship between EmaSwati and nature. A mini village which is a very good visual aid for visitors and students depicts a typical Swazi homestead.

Educational programmes

The cultural heritage department provides Educational guided tours for local and international primary, secondary, high schools and tertiary institutions. There is a special programme for preschools in both the museum and King Sobhuza II Park. An Outreach programme is specifically caters and made available for schools and communities who request a visit by the National Museum educators to their school and their communities. We offer in class presentations on culture topics such as umhlanga, imvunulo, umtsimba, butimba, umcwasho, kudla kweSiSwati amongst others. These topics enhance students understanding and appreciation of Eswatini’s cultural heritage as the museum provides visual aids.

Library

The Library assists researchers, individuals and students who have interest in culture and heritage studies. There is a variety of books and literature ranging from history, plants, Encyclopedias of medicinal plants, Encyclopedia of foods, Health and education for the family, Tibongo netinanatelo and more. There is research material on topics such as Umtsimba, Bayeni, Umngcwabo, Imvunulo, which assists individuals and students in their Siswati lessons.

ENTC Background Info

Eswatini National Trust Commission

The Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC) is responsible for conservation of the Kingdom’s natural and cultural heritage as mandated by the National Trust Commission Act No. 9 of 1972; amended by the King’s Order in Council of 1973. The ENTC carries out its mandate through proclamation and management of national parks and reserves, national museums and monuments.

The ENTC is an independent statutory body and a government parastatal, operating at the present time under the umbrella of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment Affairs. The strategic and policy framework of the organization is facilitated by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the Minister in terms of the NTC Act and the Public Enterprise Control and Monitoring Act.

The objectives of the Eswatini National Trust Commission are to:

Preserve natural and cultural heritage
Continue to develop nature conservation in the country
Create awareness and educate the public on conservation of natural and cultural heritage
Promote tourism relating to the natural and cultural heritage of the country
Implementation of all activities relating to biodiversity conservation, including responsibilities as recognised by the Eswatini Environmental Authority and other government bodies
Implementation of other biodiversity related legislation

It is important to ensure that all ENTC's activities have a minimum negative impact on the long term conservation of the natural and cultural heritage. The ENTC has a vital role to play in enhancing the quality of life in Eswatini, through conservation of its natural and cultural heritage, in the long term. The ENTC's responsibilities are on a national level and are not restricted to existing ENTC managed areas.

Operations

The Chief Executive Officer is the administrative authority with a management team of 5 responsible for the various key functions; Human Resources, Finance, Nature Conservation, Cultural Heritage Business Development Unit.
The Commission receives an annual government subvention
The subvention is augmented with revenue generated from the tourism and hospitality operations
The Trust Commission presently administers:
1. Eswatini National Museum
2. King Sobhuza II Park
3. Mantenga Nature Reserve and Cultural Village
4. Malolotja Nature Reserve, with the adjacent Hawane Dam Reserve
5. Mlawula Nature Reserve with Magadzavane Lodge
