Khabane Cave Explorer Walk Launch Press Briefing

The Eswatini National Trust Commission, in collaboration with Matsapha Rotary Club, successfully hosted the press briefing for the launch of the 4th edition of the Khabane Cave Explorer Walk at King Sobhuza II Memorial Park.

The event was graced by, Hon. Minister Jane Mkhonta-Simelane who reflected on the journey of the initiative from a bold vision to a flagship event on Eswatini’s tourism calendar highlighting its role in promoting environmental stewardship, cultural heritage preservation, and rural economic empowerment.

The Rotary Club of Matsapha reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development through strategic partnerships, highlighting the vital role of collaboration in advancing eco-tourism and promoting Eswatini’s natural heritage. The Club’s President noted that the partnership with the Eswatini National Trust Commission unites institutional expertise, community participation, and Rotary’s extensive service network to implement a project that is both impactful and sustainable.

As Brand Ambassador, Her Royal Highness Princess Sakhizwe officially launched the event and delivered a powerful message on identity, heritage, and national pride. She described the Khabane Cave as a sanctuary of our origins and a global archaeological treasure, encouraging emaSwati to embrace and promote “Made in Eswatini” including our cultural and natural heritage.

The Khabane Cave Explorer Walk stands as more than an adventure, it is a celebration of our history, a platform for community empowerment, and a call to preserve our legacy for future generations.

The 4th edition of the Khabane Cave Explorer Walk was officially launched and will take place on the 28th of June with a camping experience the night before at Mlawula Nature Reserve.

Following the successful launch of the Khabane Cave Explorer Walk, Her Royal Highness Princess Sakhizwe continued her inspiring cultural journey with a visit to the iconic King Sobhuza II Park.

It was a profound experience diving deep into the remarkable legacy of the “Father of the Nation,” King Sobhuza II, whose visionary leadership helped shape modern Eswatini.

Following the park visit, she toured the National Museum in Lobamba, exploring the rich prehistory of emaSwati. It was a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with the roots, traditions, and identity that continue to define our nation today.

Educational & Outreach Programmes

The cultural heritage department provides Educational guided tours for local and international primary, secondary, high schools and tertiary institutions. There is a special programme for preschools in both the museum and King Sobhuza II Park. An Outreach programme is specifically caters and made available for schools and communities who request a visit by the National Museum educators to their school and their communities. We offer in class presentations on culture topics such as umhlanga, imvunulo, umtsimba, butimba, umcwasho, kudla kweSiSwati amongst others. These topics enhance students understanding and appreciation of Eswatini’s cultural heritage as the museum provides visual aids.

Eswatini National Trust  Commission

The Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC) is responsible for conservation of the Kingdom’s natural and cultural heritage as mandated by the National Trust Commission Act No. 9 of 1972; amended by the King’s Order in Council of 1973. The ENTC carries out its mandate through proclamation and management of national parks and reserves, national museums and monuments.

The ENTC is an independent statutory body and a government parastatal, operating at the present time under the umbrella of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment Affairs. The strategic and policy framework of the organization is facilitated by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the Minister in terms of the NTC Act and the Public Enterprise Control and Monitoring Act. 

The objectives of the Eswatini National Trust Commission are to:

  • Preserve natural and cultural heritage
  • Continue to develop nature conservation in the country
  • Create awareness and educate the public on conservation of natural and cultural heritage
  • Promote tourism relating to the natural and cultural heritage of the country
  • Implementation of all activities relating to biodiversity conservation, including responsibilities as recognised by the Eswatini Environmental Authority and other government bodies
  • Implementation of other biodiversity related legislation

It is important to ensure that all ENTC's activities have a minimum negative impact on the long term conservation of the natural and cultural heritage. The ENTC has a vital role to play in enhancing the quality of life in Eswatini, through conservation of its natural and cultural heritage, in the long term. The ENTC's responsibilities are on a national level and are not restricted to existing ENTC managed areas.

Operations

  • The Chief Executive Officer is the administrative authority with a management team of 5 responsible for the various key functions; Human Resources, Finance, Nature Conservation, Cultural Heritage Business Development Unit.
  • The Commission receives an annual government subvention
  • The subvention is augmented with revenue generated from the tourism and hospitality operations
  • The Trust Commission presently administers:
    1. Eswatini National Museum
    2. King Sobhuza II Park
    3. Mantenga Nature Reserve and Cultural Village
    4. Malolotja Nature Reserve, with the adjacent Hawane Dam Reserve
    5. Mlawula Nature Reserve with Magadzavane Lodge
